Energy centre

The new 'Canolfan Ynni, Coleg Menai's Energy Centre is located in Llangefni at the heart of the Energy Island of Anglesey. The facility is so much more than a training centre, providing a one-stop-shop for all the skills needed in order to underpin a new generation of energy production.

'Canolfan Ynni' is built to the highest standard and has recently won an accolade in the Education Category of the BREEAM Awards Wales 2011. Containing the highest quality equipment and staff by a dedicated experienced team, the new centre can look forward to innovate and foster new and improved ways of working in the industry over the coming years.

Facilities include:

  • Sustainable Energy – Working in collaboration with the sector Skills Councils, Coleg Menai has aimed to ensure provision within the centre in order to support the numerous government initiatives from the 'Energy Feed in Tariff', the 'Renewable Heat Incentive', all the way through to the 'Microgeneration Certification scheme'.
  • Nuclear Energy – The college has worked closely with COGENT, the sector skills council for the Nuclear Industry, and NSAN, the National Skills Academy Nuclear to provide qualifications that meet the skills demands of the power generation and decommissioning sector.
  • Instrumentation and Control – This advanced technology that encompasses the fields of Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical and Fluid systems. Programmes of study to meet these training requirements will be delivered at 'Canolfan Ynni'. These range from simple single element measurements such as temperature control to full industrial applications with multiple elements being measured and controlled through microprocessors i.e. The Flow Loop Simulator.
  • Fabrication and Welding – 'Canolfan Ynni' will support the development of training and up-skilling programmes to ensure that those entering the sector have the relevant skills to meet the demand within a rapidly changing environment. The college is working in collaboration with TWI (The Welding Institute) to develop a Nuclear Fabrication Validation Centre and to develop a state of the art Non Destructive Testing facility within 'Canolfan Ynni'.
 
Menai innovation centre

Established in 2005 we provide the link between academic expertise and industry for businesses with dedicated staff working explicitly on product design projects, enabling you to take advantage of a wide variety of product design, manufacturing, prototyping and laser scanning services.

Food technology centre

The Food Technology Centre (FTC) at Coleg Menai, Llangefni was set up in conjunction with the European Union, the Welsh Government, Welsh Development Agency and Anglesey Council in 1999, with the objective of helping the long-term development of food processing and manufacturing capacity in North Wales and across the UK.

Through the provision of technical services, research and development, technical advice, and training services it helps food producers and processors t expand their businesses and aims to meet the long-term needs of the food industry and introduce an 'innovation culture' into the agri-food sector.

The present building houses three processing halls, each averaging floor space of 85 sqm, dedicated to meat, dairy and prepared foods processing. Each processing hall is equipped with an extensive range of modern pilot and industrial scale equipment for both new product development and product launch and pilot scale manufacturing.

Meat Hall

An EU licensed low throughput meat cutting plant where clients can undertake product development, lease manufacturing and meat industry based training. The hall regularly hosts practical butchery, sausage making, pie making, curing and tailor made meat based courses.

Dairy Hall

The licensed dairy processing unit is utilised for training and lease manufacturing purposes. Products produced within the dairy hall range from cheeses, yoghurts, ice cream, butter and clotted cream.

Preparation Food Hall

The prepared food processing hall comprises of a range of manufacturing equipment. Utilised for training or lease manufacturing the hall is designed to encompass best manufacturing practices to ensure the safety of high risk foods.

Laboratory

The Food Technology Centre offers a complete support service with regards to chemical and physical characteristics of food products. Analytical tests such as nutritional analysis, water activity and texture analysis are amongst some of the tests the centre can carry out, which may be as part of labelling requirements, shelf life analysis or in recipe development.

Test Kitchen

The test kitchen allows staff and clients to carry out bench top product development before commencing with pilot scale production in the food halls. This results in reducing client expenditure which is imperative in the competitive food industry. The equipment available ranges from industrial team ovens to mixing and blending table top machinery.

Conference facilities

If you are planning an event or looking for a unique venue to host a business meeting then you should consider booking a meeting room at the Energy Centre.

There are two conference rooms available for hire within the BREEM award winning building which is located on the Llangefni Site, Anglesey, LL77 7HY.

The rooms are ideally suited for a range of activities. Whether you require a small room for business meetings, or a large conference room for a training event, our rooms are first-class.

Conference Room One, can comfortably accommodate up 25 guests and is ideal for hosting meetings.

Conference Room Two, can accommodate up to 90 guests and is an excellent venue for conferences, product exhibitions, group activities and events.

The rooms can be set up to meet your requirements, be it the format of a board room, class room or group activity we can set the room to create an environment that is productive for your event.

The conference rooms are light and comfortable and can be serviced with refreshments to suit your budget. We also have an onsite Costa Coffee lounge which makes quality snacks and drinks available throughout the day.

To ensure you make the right impression, the meeting rooms are presented to a high standard and have access WIFI, projectors, presentation screens, Flat screen TV. The Llangefni site has parking facilities for up to 200+ with a drop off point close by to make loading and set up easy.
