The prestigious TRIPLE CROWN trophy came to Coleg Menai recently as part of the run-up of a Tag Rugby tournament arranged by a group of Coleg Menai HND Sport Science students.
On Friday, 9th March 2012, Chris Williams, North West Wales Development Officer for the WRU came to the college with the major trophy, much to the delight of all involved with the tournament.
The Tag Rugby tournament takes place on the 2nd May at Bethesda Rugby Club with local schools participating in the competition. All money raised from the event will be donated to the college’s charity of the year, Cancer Research UK and some of the proceeds will also be donated to Hafan Menai.
The Triple Crown visit was a perfect opportunity for the students and sponsors involved with the Tag Rugby event to kick-start their plans for the tournament.
HND Sport Science student, Marissa Duggan from Bangor commented:
“I am absolutely thrilled that the Triple Crown has come to Coleg Menai! As part of our HND Sport Science course, we have to organise an event with local employers and the Tag Rugby tournament is something that we’re all really working hard and we’re all enthusiastic about it and the preparations are going great!! We have had fantastic support from local employers who have helped to sponsor the event; the event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our sponsors. The Triple Crown visit is just fantastic! It’s given our event a great launch!”
Chris Williams, WRU Development Officer commented “The Triple Crown accompanied our Wales U20 team to North Wales this week as they prepared to take on Italy U20 at Eirias Park in Colwyn Bay. We have taken the opportunity to take the trophy to local schools and also to highlight our new link with Coleg Menai. It gives us a great opportunity to work with the students as well as the community in this area.”
Viv Gordon, Creative Media Programme Area Manager and HND Sports Science lecturer added “The Sports Science students work hard to achieve this part of their course. It gives them the opportunity to coach Tag Rugby in the community and to use the knowledge that they’ve gained from their course. They have had a fantastic response from local businesses in sponsoring this event. We hope to donate a lot of money to charity and ensure that all the students involved have a fantastic day in May. Pupils from the local primary schools participate in the event and develop an enthusiasm for Rugby and a pride in their country’s team. Hopefully the next trophy to visit our college will be the Six Nations!”
