Qualification guide
You know that learning and gaining qualifications
is the key to success in a changing world - we can
help you achieve them. Use this page to find out which qualifiactions are available at Coleg Menai.
The Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales (CQFW) allows comparison between all types of qualifications. You can find out more at www.cqfw.net. It brings all vocational qualifications into a standard format which is easy to understand. Qualifications are described by their size, level, subject and purpose. This can help you choose suitable qualifications and see how you can progress towards your goal.
This international style qualification offers a broad and varied
curriculum. As well as academic or vocational study based
on existing qualifications like BTEC courses and A Levels,
the Welsh Bac offers you opportunities to use and improve
the skills required for further study or by employers such as
communication and working with others. You will also develop
your knowledge of contemporary Welsh life and Europe and
the World, study a language and participate in community
activities and work-related experience. The qualification also
includes a programme of personal and social education.
This qualification is available at one of three levels –
Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. The Advanced Level
is widely accepted as an entry qualification by Universities,
being equivalent to an A grade in one A Level.
These are highly respected qualifications at Level 3 that usually follow positive results in GCSE. The courses are
usually studied over a two-year period. Up to five subjects can be studied from the 30 choices on offer in thousands of combinations. Most people, however, choose four, and often
concentrate on three of these in the second year. All of these programmes can lead to Higher Education.
At Level 3, these recently re-launched qualifications are a serious alternative to A Level, and replace the former National Diploma. The Extended Diploma is a vocational qualification at an advanced standard that is equivalent
to three A Levels, the Diploma is worth two and the Subsidiary Diploma counts as one.
These qualifications lead to University courses or professional qualifications, as well as opening the door to a wide range of careers. You can choose from a diverse range of including Forensic Science, Business
and Management, Care, Travel and Tourism, Construction and Engineering.
These courses are offered in a range of vocational areas and provide the foundation for entering careers or progression onto Level 3 qualifications. They
are equivalent to four GCSEs at Grades A* to C.
These are Level 3 courses for learners who can offer varied and wide experience away from education but who may not have the formal qualifications to go to Higher Education.
They also provide essential study skills, help build up confidence for study at a higher level and open the doors to career opportunities as well as University education.
You can re-sit GCSEs in Welsh, English and Mathematics
through attendance at daytime classes if you achieved a
grade D previously. If your grade is lower than a grade D
and you wish to re-sit, you can join a course in the evening.
NVQs are offered from Levels 1-5 and can be gained through College study supported by workplace experience. They have been designed to develop the required skills that are specified
by employers. Learners may continue adding to their list of NVQs throughout their working lives.
Agored Cymru units are available from Level 1-3 and are
offered as practical bite-sized courses.
