If it is used before a verb, it means May I ..?. It is used very often indeed. To understand its derivation, would require more advanced knowledge of Welsh, but you can safely use it after working through this lesson, provided you know how to answer the question/request that starts with Ga i. Ga i helpu? / May I help? Ga i fynd? / May I go? Ga i ddwad i'r parti? / May I come to the party? Ga i ista yma? / May I sit here? ( ista is commonly used for eistedd - to sit) You can see (and, more importantly hear!) that Ga i triggers the soft mutation where possible.
