Gwenda: Mi wnes i siarad efo Janet yn y clwb rygbi. Llinos: Ydy hi'n iawn? Gwenda: Ydy. Listen to dialogue 1 again Geirfa neithiwr / last night gweld / to see ,seeing siarad / to speak , speaking siarad efo / to speak to (literally to speak with) Mi wnes i / I did .. Gramadeg / Grammar Past tense By this, we mean the tense that conveys the idea that you did something. For example: I went I saw In Welsh,
particularly in the north, these examples can be conveyed by saying: We can (and very often do) use the past tense of gwneud (to do), coupled with the appropriate verb. Mi wnes i = I did. The two parts, Mi wnes i + mynd couple together to form: Mi wnes i fynd = I did go = I went. Thus Mi wnes i triggers the soft mutation. In Mi wnes i, the wnes corresponds to did, the i corresponds to I, and the mi is what we call a positive marker, indicating that what follows is a positive statement. This will make more sense to you as your knowledge of Welsh progresses. However, we are now in danger of getting a little too theoretical here, so for now, just learn: Mi wnes i = I did. Note: There is no yn after Mi wnes i. The phrase Mi wnes i'n mynd is totally incorrect. Ymarfer/Exercise 12.1 Say you did the following.
