Ydw / I do

Dach chi'n byw ym Mangor? / Do you live in Bangor?
Nac ydw / I don't (The nac negates the ydw!)

The following principle is very important and applied right across the Welsh Language::

In English, the above type of question can be answered two ways:

either: (a) yes/no or: (b) I do/I don't

In Welsh, we must always use (b). In the above case it is Ydw or Nac ydw depending on whether you want to answer in the positive (affirmative) or in the negative. Thus we don't actually say yes or no in answer to such questions. Some learners get confused because they are told that there are hundreds of different ways of answering yes and no. This isn't really the case. It is far less confusing if you adopt the view that when we answer a yes/no question we don't actually say yes or no. In other words, we answer with a form of the verb that is used in the question. Here are some more examples:

If you were asked the following questions in Welsh, Your Welsh answer would be equivalent to those as shown:

Is it raining? It is / It isn't
Does John like ice cream? He does / He doesn't
Are there any sausages in the fridge? There are / There aren't
Would you like to come to my party? I would / I wouldn't.

Answer the following questions with either Ydw or Nac ydw.

Dach chi'n hoffi te? (tea) / Dach chi'n licio 'castor oil' ?

Dach chi'n byw ym Mangor?
