Grammar
We've shown you how to say I like, I live, John likes, he likes, Siân likes, she likes, etc. Here, we show you how to say the negative version, eg I don't like, John doesn't like, etc.

The negative of dw i (I am) is dw i ddim (I am not). So we replace dw i with
dw i ddim as follows.

Dw i 'n licio cwrw. I like beer.

Dw i ddim yn licio cwrw. I don't like beer.

Note:
a) In spoken Welsh, you will almost always come across dim, mutated to ddim (see later lesson) in negative sentences. In this context, the word dim can be though of as being similar in meaning to the English word not.

b) In the positive sentence, the yn has been reduced to 'n to eliminate the vowel clash between i and y. In the negative sentence, the yn is there in full, because ddim ends with a consonant.

Exercise 1

Talk about other people using negatives.
When you talked in the negative about yourself , you changed dw i to dw i ddim. When you talk about other people in the present tense, its not quite as simple!

eg Mae John yn hoffi cwrw. The negative is not - Mae John ddim yn hoffi cwrw.
We need one extra change. The word mae is changed to dydy.

Positive: Mae John yn hoffi cwrw. John likes beer.
Negative: Dydy John ddim yn hoffi cwrw. John doesn't like beer.

Positive: Mae o 'n chwarae rygbi. He plays rugby.
Negative: Dydy o ddim yn chwarae rygbi. He doesn't play rugby.

Positive: Mae Siân yn byw ym Mangor. Siân lives in Bangor.
Negative: Dydy Siân ddim yn byw ym Mangor. Siân doesn't live in Bangor.

Positive: Mae hi 'n dysgu Cymraeg. She is learning Welsh.
Negative: Dydy hi ddim yn dysgu Cymraeg. She is not learning Welsh.
