A Commitment to Parents and Families of Students Up To 18 Years Old
At Coleg Menai we are aware that the move from school to college can be the cause of many concerns and misconceptions. This leaflet is an acknowledgement of this possibility and sets out to establish the minimum level of support that we will give. We intend to exceed your expectations and indeed most parents tell us that they are very pleased at the high level of pastoral care in the college.
As parents / guardians of students in Coleg Menai you will receive the following:
- A welcome letter: soon after enrolling we shall write and inform you about your student’s personal tutor and give you a copy of the timetable. You will also receive a list of all the relevant subject lecturers, personal tutors and programme managers with contact telephone numbers and e-mail addresses.
- An introductory parents’ evening: during the first half term we will arrange for you to meet with the personal tutors, subject lecturers and managers and receive a calendar of events and dates for the year and a copy of the absence procedure as well as further information concerning the programme.
- Contact on absence: we will inform you by telephone and/or letter if the student is missing for more than three unexplained absences. (Very often you will be contacted after a single absence from a class!).
- Two written reports: detailing the attendance and progress of the student through the year. These are not computer-generated reports but are written by the lecturers who are giving their professional assessment of academic progress.
- Parents’ evening: at the start of the year we will give you the date of a parents’ evening when appointments may be made to speak with subject lecturers and personal tutors. There will also be opportunity to speak with programme managers.
- An open invitation : of course, you can contact us at any time so that a separate, private interview with the relevant staff may be arranged.
In return we ask that you:
- Contact the relevant person in the Faculty to report the absence of your student from classes by the morning of that absence, preferably by 9.00am.
- Contact the relevant person in the Faculty to inform us of a change to family circumstances or address of the student.
- Support your son/daughter in achieving their qualification and attend all meetings
- Return all reply slips promptly to the relevant person
