Bangor & the surrounding area

Bangor is a great place to be a student.

  • Bangor is a known as the City of Learning and has over 10 000 students studying here. Our partner, Bangor University is a long established institution and was founded in 1884.
  • At the heart of the city is the ancient St Deiniol's Cathedral which is one of the oldest in the country. It was founded in 525AD.
  • Due to the high number of students in the city, you can entertain yourself at the weekend in one of the many bars, pubs, restaurants including the university Student Union
  • You can visit one of the many magnificent castles such as Caernarfon, which is a world heritage site and where Prince Charles was knighted the Prince of Wales.
  • The surrounding area of Bangor is called Snowdonia. This area attracts over 10 million visitors each year who come to visit the scenic beauty of the mountains and sea
  • You can do any number of sporting activities in and around Bangor and there are lots of nationally recognised sporting centres such as Plas Menai Watersports Centre. You can do surfing, sailing, kayaking, rock-climbing, diving, hiking, or even try rugby- the national sport.
  • Bangor has one of the longest high streets in Wales where you can find national chain stores such as Marks & Spencer's, or small boutiques. Of course, you could choose to spend a day shopping in major cities such as Manchester and Liverpool which are all a short distance away.

  • You will find that Bangor is also one of the cheapest places to live in the UK so you can spend more money on enjoying your time in Wales.
  • North Wales is also a safe place to live as a student and has one of lowest crime rates in the UK
