Learning Support

If you have any individual needs because of any disability, then the college will help by providing the
support you need. If you feel your opportunities for study will be restricted by a learning difficulty such as dyslexia or a physical disability, then get in touch with us on 01248 370 125 or e-mail learning.support@ menai.ac.uk, so that we can discuss your support needs.

Our Promise!

Coleg Menai promises that:

  • disabled people, including those with learning difficulties, will be treated fairly;
  • all reasonable adjustments to provision will be made so that disabled students and other disabled people are not substantially disadvantaged.

In making these promises, the college seeks to uphold both the letter and the spirit of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, as amended by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001, and also the Code of Practice Post-16.

If you are a disabled person and would like to join the college, please let us know what help you need. If you are not sure of what you may need then contact us as indicated at the end of this booklet. Either way, you can be sure that you will be treated in an understanding and confidential manner. We are here to help you.

Note: For those wishing to look at them, copies of the legislation and code of practice are available in the college.

What type of support is available?

Many types, depending on need, such as:

  • individual tutors;
  • examination readers and writers;
  • extra examination time;
  • equipment;
  • specially designed software;
  • personal care support;
  • special toilet facilities.

To discuss your support needs:

Regardless of the college site on which you would like to study, in the first instance contact Student Services in Bangor. Ask to speak to the Learning Support officer.

Plan ahead

The sooner staff know who you are and what your needs are, the better placed they will be to help you.

Ensuring that everything is in place for you to study effectively usually involves a number of people, some of whom may not be directly connected with the college. Getting everyone working together for your benefit does take time and this is why it is so important for College staff to know of your learning needs.

Your learning agreement

After enrolment, the support provided for your study will be agreed with you and details will be stated in a learning agreement that is called an ISLA (Individual Student Learning Agreement)
